For over two decades, young people in Ponoka have been looked at for their contributions and making the community better.

This year marked the 22nd annual Leaders of Tomorrow awards program with a presentation to all the nominees at a ceremony April 15 at St. Augustine School.

A total 34 young people received recognition for being leaders in the community or their school as well as for their volunteer participation and spirit.

Leanne Brusegard, chair of the Leaders of Tomorrow Ponoka committee, noted it shouldn’t puzzle anyone that these young people exemplify what everyone should aspire to.

“And they fit wonderfully into our theme this year of — leaders are pieces of the puzzle, that when put together make a beautiful tomorrow,” explained Brusegard.

What makes these awards different is that all of the nominees in the three categories — Elementary, Junior and Senior — are honoured and receive certificates and gifts.

However, in the Junior and Senior categories, two individuals are selected for special recognition as winners of the award. This year, the junior winners were Kianna McLean and Morgan Deschiffart while the senior winners were Sarah Thomas and Sarah Zimmerman.

For McLean, winning was a bit surprising, but the award isn’t why she commits her time to giving back to her community.

“In my mind, I’m happy if I can make the people I’m helping smile. I want to be a better person and I do that by making others feel better, by lifting their spirits,” said McLean, who was nominated for her numerous school awards and the volunteer efforts done out of the goodness of her heart.

Meanwhile, Thomas’ nomination came from her activity in her church, with Santas Anonymous, the Humanitarian club and as a mentor who lends a hand without being asked.

“It was somewhat of a surprise for sure,” Thomas said, “But doing what I do is fun and I love to serve others as the opportunities are out there. And, you get out of it what you put in by giving back.”
