Students at St. Augustine Catholic School are in the throws of rehearsals for their spring play.

More than 30 students make up the cast and crew of the play, Into the Woods Jr., a modern twist of the well-known Brothers Grimm fairy tales, explained drama instructor Nicole Josephison.

Play-goers can expect to see their favourite characters from the performance such as Cinderella and her prince, Jack and the Beanstalk along with Little Red Riding Hood and the big bad wolf, plus Rapunzel and her prince.

“They are all brought together when the Baker and his wife embark on a journey to lift a witch’s curse, so they can have a baby. This musical has a little something for everyone as it has continual twists and turns,” explained Josephison.

For her the goal of this musical was to showcase the talents of as many students as she could.

“The student vocals are simply astounding and I am extremely proud,” she explained.

It’s been a fast-paced schedule, said Josephison, who added that it has been a team effort to be ready for opening night. The drama students have designed and painted the sets, some of the costumes have been handmade by Grade 11 student Kiara Johnson and some have been loaned out by the Klaglahachie Fine Arts Society.

“It has been remarkable to see our students share their gifts beyond singing and acting,” she said.

Show dates are set for this weekend with 7 p.m. shows for April 28 and 29 at the school.

Like last year, prior to the show there will be a High School Art Exhibit in the foyer, which has become a fun part of the experience. For more information contact the school at 403-704-1155.
