It’s that time of year again when a number of area students showcase their talent.

Ponoka and area senior home schooled students, called the Ponoka Thespians, are set to stage the hilarious comedy play Kokonut Kapers with four performances next week.

The somewhat musical comedic play, complete with swift action, treasure trove of funniness and a plot that swirls like a hurricane, will be presented on March 1 through March 3 at the Asker Lutheran Church located one mile east of Mecca Glen School then one mile north on Range Road 232.

The play, based on the book by Tim Kelly, features a woman and her children forced to find ways to earn money on the storm-devastated island. It’s decided to open an institute of higher learning where, for a hefty tuition, students can earn a degree for such courses as Clam Digging 109, Sun Tanning 106 and Beach Combing 107.

With students in tow, a crime syndicate also lands on the island wishing to take over the school. In another wave of the plot, a ghost seen by only one person attempts to warn everyone to get off his island.

The rest of the cast of characters fuming parents, long lost guests, the Coast Guard and a Russian princess imposter —complete the zaniness, which gets tossed about like a ship in high seas when the school sees a team from the mainland come to certify it and meet the faculty. The problem is, the teachers don’t exist.

The performances on March 1 (7 p.m.) and March 3 (1:30 and 7 p.m.) are admission by free will offering, with the afternoon matinee intended for seniors and families with small children. The lone March 2 show (7 p.m.) will be a dessert night with Lacombe’s Sweet Capone’s Bakery providing the treats.

Tickets for dessert night are available at $15 each and can be purchased by calling (403) 391-7898.
