On June 2, 2021 at 3:48 p.m., a male contacted the Camrose Police Service advising that following a visitation at his residence, his ex-common-law partner had just taken their 18-month-old child and drove away. The male was concerned for the female’s behaviour as she took the child unexpectedly, and was transporting their toddler without any type of child restraint seat.

Police located the vehicle a short time later and a traffic stop was conducted on 48 Ave. and 68 St. while stopped at a red light. Police approached the vehicle but the female refused to follow direction. The vehicle then fled by making dangerous, aggressive maneuvers as it evaded police, nearly striking a police officer.

Police observed the vehicle disobey other traffic laws and exit the City of Camrose at a high rate of speed. Out of concern for everyone’s safety, including that of the unrestrained child, police ceased all overt attempts to stop the vehicle.

Members of the Camrose Police Service and the RCMP from Wetaskiwin, Camrose, Maskwacis, Traffic Services and Red Deer detachments worked together to monitor the vehicle in a safe manner until it was observed meeting up with another female near the City of Lacombe where the child was transferred to the other vehicle. A short time later, RCMP were able conduct a traffic stop of the second vehicle and the child was apprehended safely.

RCMP attempted to conduct a traffic stop on the child’s mother who continued to make evasive actions again failing to stop for police. The female was subsequently located a short while later at a residence in the Town of Olds where she was arrested and taken into custody. The female is facing two charges of criminal flight, assault with a weapon and a charge of endangering the life of a child.

The 32-year-old is in custody as she awaits a bail hearing. The Camrose Police Service wishes to recognize the invaluable and professional assistance provided by the RCMP who were able to safely and effectively resolve this serious incident.
