Two Mounties are being credited with saving a man’s life when they responded to a house fire in Hobbema.

Hobbema RCMP spokesman Const. Perry Cardinal said constables Pernell Cardinal and David Lee saw flames in the living room of a home in the Samson townsite around 8 p.m. April 18 and heard a muffled voice from inside the home.

Maskwachees Fire Department was dispatched and the two officers then entered the residence and located a man asleep on a smoldering mattress that was partially burned and close to igniting.

A 21-year-old man was awakened by the officers and safely removed from the home. He was examined by Maskwachees Ambulance attendants and did not require further medical attention.

The officers were treated in hospital for smoke inhalation and released.

Cardinal said both officers are to be commended for their actions and quick thinking as they likely saved the life of the man and prevented the destruction of the home, while putting their own lives at risk.

Police and fire investigators continue to investigate the cause of the fire.
