HALVAR C. JONSON


August 14, 1941 – December 2, 2016


Halvar de la Cluyse Jonson was born in Athabasca to Frances (de la Cluyse) and Huram Jonson. He was raised on a farm outside of Boyle, where he attended school until Grade 12. He earned his B. Ed and M. Ed at the University of Alberta. In 1963, he married Maxine Saville of Wainwright. Halvar spent 18 years teaching and as a principal with the bulk of his time living and working in Ponoka. After briefly teaching in Bentley, Halvar and Maxine moved to Ponoka in 1966 where they raised their children. He became principal of Crestomere School and Ponoka Composite High School. In 1976-77 he was the president of the Alberta Teachers’ Association. In 1982 he became the MLA for the Ponoka-Rimbey constituency. During this time he held the provincial ministerial portfolios of Education, Health, Environment and Intergovernmental Affairs. He was honoured to serve the Ponoka, Rimbey and Bashaw communities, and was always grateful to those who supported his efforts and time in the Legislature until this retirement in 2004. Halvar is survived by his wife Maxine of 53 years, three children: Halvar Jr. (Pamela), Trent (Paula) and Tamara (Jason); six grandchildren: Alanna, Damon, Solomon, Cyrus, Sloane and Harvey; and one sister Clara (Jack) Milner of St. Albert. A public Funeral Service will be held on Friday, December 9, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. at the St. Mary’s Anglican Church in Ponoka. The Jonson family would like to extend their sincere gratitude to the Centennial Centre for Mental Health and Brain Injury, and Northcott Care Centre for the excellent care of their husband and father for the last five years.
