It is with tremendous sadness that the family of Owen “Wayne” Lloyd notifies you of our loss. Born July 21, 1942, the only child of Owen “Slim” and Gwendolyn Lloyd, Wayne passed away May 29, 2010 after a hard-fought, courageous and dignified battle with leukemia. Born on his beloved Lloyd family farm, est. 1900 on the banks of the Battle River in Ponoka, the land he loved so much, raising cattle and farming was his passion. Wayne attained his masters degree in education and, taught in Rimbey, Ponoka and Banff, touching many student’s lives over the years as an educator, culminating his professional career as an educational consultant for the provincial government. As a capable and enthusiastic coach of a number of high school sports teams, he took several to provincial championships. A natural and competitive athlete, Wayne enjoyed curling and golf. His true zeal was playing for the local hockey teams starting at an early age (earning the nickname of Sugarbear) through to adulthood where he greatly enjoyed the comraderie of his friends on the Ponoka Chevy Oldstars. Wayne was a lover of laughs and good times and could always be counted on to liven any occasion with jokes or stories. Even through the process of the disease he retained his sense of humour and was one of the favourite patients with his doctors and nurses at the U of A. Any July 1st you could find Wayne with his merry band of friends camped at the Ponoka Stampede or working the backgate at the grounds. He was an extremely honest and hard-working man. Passionate for family, Wayne will be dearly missed by his mom Gwen, his spouse of 30 years Joy, his two sons Aaron (Monica) and Cody (Tricia), his step-daughter Jenean (Brett) and his 6 grandchildren. A celebration of Wayne’s life will be held at the Ponoka Legion at 2:00pm Thursday, June3, 2010. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Wayne’s memory to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society or the Canadian Cancer Society.
