Ponoka News readers feel it’s time to modernize how proof of auto insurance works.

A question posed on our website asked, “Do you think Alberta should allow motorists to have digital proof of insurance?”

Out of the 33 votes the majority, 27, feel the province should allow digital proof of insurance. Of the rest, four do not feel it needs to change, and two were unsure.

On Ponoka News’ Facebook page, reader Karl Norton stated, “Absolutely.”

“We already issue pink cards via email until the customer receives their ‘official’ one in the mail,” explained Norton. “This would allow police ‘real time’ verification of insurance, rather than a piece of paper which may or may not be valid.”

His concern with the current process is that some motorists may pay the first month of their insurance and then not make further payments, yet they still have their card showing it’s valid until a certain date.

“The number of illegal, uninsured motorists on the road in Alberta is terrifying.”

The question came about after Ponoka News reported a group advocating for the change.

That group, Canadian Council of Insurance Regulators (CCRI), feels that the speed of technology has changed, plus consumers want to see the implementation of electronic proof of automobile insurance.
