There is no year-long goal for the Lacoka midget Locos lacrosse team and that seems to be working just fine.

The Lacoka Midget Locos lacrosse club started the 2017 season unbeaten through four games in spite of having only a couple second year players. The Locos first three games were on the road and included the closest contest so far, an 11-5 victory on April 29. The club’s lone home game to date was a 17-8 win over Olds on May 5, which added to the Locos dominance having outscored their opponents 55-22.

“We have a good team with a lot of players that I coached in the Alberta Summer Games,” explained head coach Mike Wood.

“And all of the offence that’s been generated, a lot of it is simply because of the team’s skill and talent since all we have really done in practice is focus on our defensive work.

Wood’s coaching philosophy of ‘taking it one practice, one game at a time’ is already taking hold as the club is showing continued improvement.

“Blackfalds was undefeated when we beat them, Olds has the top coaches in the league and the team did very well winning the pre-season tournament in Brooks,” he said.

“We used that as a development weekend and things are going so well, I know the tier one coaches in Red Deer are watching some of our players.”

For Wood, constant progress is what he wants to see even though he knows there will be some blips along the way.

“The biggest thing for me is that we can’t stop developing. The players need to stay on track and get better each week,” he stated.

Stick work - The Midget Locos will look to keep the streak going this weekend as they host Red Deer Friday at 7:30 p.m., followed by a pair of road games, Saturday in Innisfail and Sunday in Red Deer. In other Locos action, the bantam girls squad got their first ever victory a 7-2 win in St. Albert on May 6.

Other Lacoka teams playing at home this weekend include: bantam 1 versus Sylvan Lake (6 p.m.) Friday and Olds (4:30 p.m.) Saturday; novice vs Olds (12:30 p.m.) Saturday and Didsbury (11 a.m.) Sunday; peewee vs Red Deer (3 p.m.) Saturday and Innisfail (noon) Sunday; bantam 2 vs Innisfail (6 p.m.) Saturday and Didsbury (1:15 p.m.) Sunday; bantam girls vs Westlock (1:30 p.m.) Saturday; and, the Junior B Locos hosting Strathmore Saturday (8 p.m.).
