Three Ponoka female hockey players helped their team earn gold at provincials.

The players are part of the Red Deer Sutter Fund Chiefs. A midget female elite team that managed being undefeated at provincials in Sherwood Park from March 23 to 26.

The athletes are Lindsay Jansen, Danica Polson and Kelli-Rae Sieben who joined the team, which is also in its first year. Designed as a feeder team for midget female AAA, two of the girls are aging out of midget: Jansen and Polson, while this was Sieben’s first year.

The team had a strong season and it showed at provincials where they tied their first game 2-2 then won the rest, including the gold medal game. They played Calgary Fire Red March 23 where they tied. Then March 24 first against Edmonton Pandas winning 3-1 and then Peace Country Storm winning 3-0.

On March 25 the team played Sherwood Park Fury winning 4-0. In the gold medal game the next day, the Chiefs played Peace Country Storm for a second time defeating them 4-1, securing the gold.
