Ponoka and area rodeo round up

The Alberta High School Rodeo Association finals will take place in Ponoka on June 14 and 15 and leading up to the finals the rising stars of rodeo have been very busy. On April 19, they competed in the rodeo in Delburne. Many cowboys and cowgirls from Ponoka and area competed and here are their results.

On day one of the event Bailey Whyte placed sixth in the barrels with a time of 14.624. On day two Whyte improved her time placing fourth with a two-day total of 22.6. Coby Auclair placed eighth in the barrels with a two-day total of 23.15.

In goat tying, Taylor Smith placed first with a time of 9.9 and Auclair tied for seventh with a time of 13.2. In breakaway roping Gina Flewelling placed third with a time of 3.4 and Lawrie Saunders placed fourth with a time of 3.6.

In tie down roping, Lane Wolf placed third with a time of 12.9 and Brett Buss placed fourth with a time of 13.6. In team roping, Clay Ullery and Lane Wolf placed first with a time of 5.5 and Brett Buss and Riley Warren placed sixth with a time of 17.7.

At the St.Paul high school rodeo on April 12 and 13 the results are as follows.

In barrels, Whyte placed third with a time of 15.00. On day two in barrels Auclair placed second with a time of 14.75 and Whyte placed third with a time of 14.78. In pole bending, Taylor Smith placed first with a time of 20.8, Flewelling placed sixth with a time of 22.88 and Auclair finished tenth with a time of 23.33. On day two of pole bending, Whyte finished seventh with a time of 22.80. In goat tying Auclair placed fifth with a time of 11 and on day two Flewelling placed first with a time of 8.3, Saunders placed fifth with a time of 9.9 and Auclair was sixth with a time of 10.4. In breakaway roping Josee Meston placed second with a time of 4.5, Smith was fourth with a time of 6.2, Flewelling was ninth with a time of 13.5 and Saunders was tenth with a 16. In tie down roping, Buss was first on day one with 9.9 and on day two he was fourth with a time of 11.3 Warren was first on day two with a 9.8 and Mack Smith was eighth with a time of 16.9. On day one of the team roping Buss and Warren placed second with a time of 8.2 and on day two they were first with a time of 6.9. Also in team roping Taylor Smith and Randi McCook had a time of 13.2. In bull riding Wacey Finkbeiner was first on day one with a ride earning 75 points. In steer wrestling Reid Butterfield was third with a time of 7.2.

Junior division

The Wrangler Junior division held their rodeo in Delburne on April 26 and 27 the following is the results of the Ponoka and area participants. In barrels, MacKenzie Braithwaite placed fourth with a time of 14.68 and Jessa Galloway placed ninth with a time of 15.14. In pole bending, on day one Galloway placed first with a time of 21.89 and on day two she placed second with a time of 21.69. In girls goat tying, Galloway placed seventh with a time of 13.1 on day one and on day two she placed seventh with a time of 12.3. In girls breakaway roping, Braithwaite placed second with a time of 4.5 and Galloway placed third with a time of 5.7. On day two Galloway placed third with a time of 5.2. In ribbon roping, Jordan and Jayne Lauweryssen placed fourth with a time of 12.6 and Robert Saunders and Jossie Doenz had a time of 15.9 placing them seventh. In chute dogging Sheldon Stretch had a time of 27.4 for sixth place. In boys goat tying, Saunders had a time of 14.3 and Cawl Braithwaite had a time of 15.4 finishing in ninth and tenth. In boys breakaway roping Cawl Braithwaite finished first on day one with a time of 3.4 and on day two he placed second with a time of 2.8. Saunders had a time of 5.3 to finish in eighth place.

At the Hobbema Wrangler rodeo held on April 19, the following are the results of the local cowboys and cowgirls.

MacKenzie Braithwaite finished first in barrels with a time of 14.70 and Sam Smith placed sixth with a time of 15.39. In pole bending Braithwaite placed first with a time of 21.39, Galloway was fifth with a time of 21.92 and Smith was eighth with a time of 22.40. In girls breakaway Smith finished second with a time of 6. In boys breakaway Logan Bonnett placed first with a time of 3.7 and Saunders placed fourth with a time of 5.5. In boys goats, Bonnett placed eighth with a time of 16.6. In team roping, Logan and Keely Bonnett placed third with a time of 18.9. In tie down roping Keely Bonnett placed second with a time of 15. In ribbon roping the team of Robert Saunders and Tamara Davies placed eighth with a time of 18.4 and in tenth place was the team of Logan Bonnett and Jenny Massing with a time of 24.8. Nicholas Smith placed fourth in chute dogging with a time of 11.7 and Keely Bonnett finished ninth with a time of 23.9.

College Rodeo

Jake Vold from Ponoka continues to do well at Montana State University in the Big Sky Region. At their rodeo on April 18 and 19 he finished second with 72 points. At the Dawson Community College rodeo on April 25 to 27 in placed second with 137 points. As of April 28 he was second overall in bareback riding with 712.5 points.

The Canadian Professional Rodeo Association season is well underway leading up to the excitement of the two time professional rodeo of the year at the Ponoka Stampede on June 25 to July 1.

At the Dodge Extreme Indoor Pro Rodeo in Lethbridge on March 28 to 30 Justin Meston of Tees finished third in saddle bronc with 72 points and won $387. At the Medicine Hat Spring Rodeo Meston finished seventh in saddle bronc with 68 points winning $170. In steer wrestling Trygve Pugh from Ponoka tied for fourth with a time of 4.0 winning $1,304. Also in steer wrestling Kyle Felker of Ponoka tied for seventh with a time of 4.4 winning $365.

At the Coleman rodeo on April 25 to 27 four Ponoka cowboys placed and did well. In steer wrestling Larue Olson and Craig Weisgerber finished in a three-way tie for for fourth place with a time of 5.2, each won $618. In team roping,Tyrell Gordon and Trevor Jones placed third with a time of 6.6 winning $1,111.

At the Leduc rodeo on May 2 to 4, Jake Vold placed fourth with 81.5 points winning $584.

At the Stavely rodeo May 2 to 4, Meston placed fifth in saddle bronc with a score of 76 points winning $371. Brock Butterfield finished in a three-way tie for second with a time of 3.9 earning him $1,282.
