Young cowboys head to nationals

Ponoka competitors Emily Massing and Kash Bonnett are heading to the high school rodeo nationals this summer.

The Alberta High School Rodeo Junior High division provincial finals were held in Nanton on May 10 to 12. The top 20 finishers in all events were invited to compete for a chance to win a top fourth placing that would allow them to represent the province at the National Junior High Rodeo Finals in Gallup, N. M. in June.

Ponoka area students who qualified for the provincial finals were Kash Bonnett, Emily Massing, Alyson Fox and Montana Klassen. After three days of competition Massing placed second in breakaway, fifth in goat tying and in ribbon roping, and 17th in barrel racing. Kash Bonnett placed third in team roping, seventh in ribbon roping, 11th in chute dogging and 19th in goat tying. Alyson Fox placed fifth in barrel racing, and Montana Klassen placed 18th in pole bending.
