The Ponoka Branch of the Royal Canadian Legion is looking for information and stories from Ponoka residents on their memories and knowledge regarding information on veterans from the First World War, the Second World War and the Korean War.

The Legion is helping compose a military service recognition book that will include and feature the lives of many veterans that served so that Canadians would maintain their priceless freedom.

President of the Legion, Dorothy Houghton, believes that it is important to gather the information for the book and hopes that the community will support the effort.

“This recognition of our veterans and service personnel of this great organization are too important to let slip away,” said Houghton. “So let’s get behind this project and make it a successful and memorable publication.”

Houghton and committee members, comrades Walt Burchnall, Al Carder and Hugh Green encourage the public to send in their information.

“Our local branch has a list of approximately 1400 names and through letters and telephone calls the committee is trying to contact as many people as possible but we know that we will not be able to contact them all,” said Houghton. “The names on the honour roll at the Legion and the Forest Cemetery, we do not know the descendents to mail that information.”

The information should be handed in as soon as possible and for sure before Oct. 15. The information will then be assembled and send to Command by Dec. 1. The publication of histories and stories will be done before March 31, 2009.
