People near the Blaine Boyd Memorial Recreation Park will hear something peculiar next week — the sound of metal crashing and motors revving.

The 20th annual Clive Lions Club Demolition Derby kicks off on July 10 at 1 p.m.

“It’s a great time for kids and adults alike to come out and have some fun,” said organizer Dave Boyd.

According to Boyd, the derby usually has between 25 and 30 entries for both the car demolition derby as well as the half-ton smash-up.

The Lions Club is requesting that patrons do not bring drugs, alcohol or pets to the event to keep it family friendly. Coolers are also prohibited.

Cars will be separated into different heats and there is also a ‘cripple’ challenge that allows cars that still run to take part in a special heat.

With $1,250 up for grabs, competition is sure to be intense.

The prize money for the event is not the only money that will be made, though. The derby is a major fundraiser for the Clive Lions Club.

“It’s definitely one of our biggest,” said Boyd.

To produce revenue for the club, they will charge $10 per person over seven years old as well as a 50/50 draw and a cash raffle.

The money raised for the Lions Club will be used toward the community, says Boyd.

“The slogan for the Lions Club is ‘We Serve’,” said Boyd. “We’re raising money to make things better for the entire community.”
