Students’ understanding and appreciation of the environment around them will get a boost from a donation from EnCana Corporation.

The natural gas company presented a cheque for $5,000 to the JJ Collett Natural Area Foundation last week. Salwa El-Maghwry, a public and community relations adviser with EnCana, said the donation will be used to offset the cost to schools to visit the wilderness area near Morningside.

This is the second year the company has donated to the foundation as part of its community investment in education.

Spokesman Jack Surbey said this is the sixth or seventh year the foundation has hosted school groups on educational nature hikes. About 18 classes will attend the nature area this spring to learn about the flora and fauna of the more than 600 acres of rolling parkland.

“We would have a hard time doing it ourselves,” Surbey said. “We don’t have much revenue. These guys enable us to be able to do it.”

El-Maghwry and Don Letwinetz from EnCana’s Ponoka office, joined a class from Blackfalds to tour the natural area.
