FCSS prepares for volunteer appreciation banquet and celebration

Volunteers in the community will have their day to shine during Ponoka’s Family and Community Support Services

Volunteers in the community will have their day to shine during Ponoka’s Family and Community Support Services (FCSS) volunteer banquet set for Sunday, April 12 at the Kinsmen Community Centre.

The event will be held during Volunteer Week, April 12 through 18, a time dedicated to recognizing individuals who have gone over and above the call of duty to help their community. The appreciation event will include entertainment from comedian Jebb Fink, explained Shelly Van Eaton, program co-ordinator with FCSS.

“Many organizations rely immensely on volunteers, so we are always on the lookout for more to sign up,” she said.

Van Eaton feels the celebration will not only recognize those community helpers but will also show people that there are many ways a person can help out. “Maybe picking up groceries for their neighbor or mowing a lawn for an elderly person in need, volunteerism has many faces,” she noted.

Some individuals help with their local organizations and others may find they are more comfortable in other ways.

“Some people in our community put forth efforts of kindness daily and ask nothing in return. Volunteerism is the purest natural resource in a community that we hope never runs dry,” she added.

Among the fun parts of the banquet will be an ice cream parlor for attendees. The event is an invitation to the public and anyone interested must RSVP by Wednesday, April 1 to guarantee a ticket. For more information call Van Eaton at 403-783-4462 or email programc@telus.net.
