A ‘Thank You to the Firefighters’ barbecue was held at the Ponoka Community Garden on Sept. 19.

“We have a community garden, and that group wanted to show their appreciation to our firefighters because they fill the huge tank there with water,” said Shannon Boyce-Campbell, FCSS executive director.

According to the Ponoka FCSS website, there are 44 plots available for rent in the garden.

Some communities have to haul their own water in pails to their garden plots, added Shelly Van Eaton, FCSS program coordinator.

She added that the plan is to see the barbecue become an annual event.

“We are so lucky,” she said, referring to the assistance with the water.

“Lots of the dishes at the barbecue were harvested from the garden, too,” she said, adding that FCSS manages the garden. “It’s a beautiful place.”

The plots are located at the end of 35 Avenue, beyond the stand of spruce trees.
