Ponoka was well represented at the 2008 Give the Gift of Life Run and Walk on Sept. 7 in Red Deer. Mary Schultz, 76 years old, walked with her team, “Mary’s Marchers” made up of four generations of her family. The team raised a total of $3,150 for the cause. Schultz has been on dialysis for almost three years and is not eligible for a kidney transplant, so she takes each day as it comes and lives life to the fullest.

Stan and Glenda Orlesky of Ponoka also took part in the walk as a member of team Donald’s Darlin’s raising $4,319 for the Kidney Foundation.

Steve Whitecotton, a former kidney patient, walked the full two kilometers to help raise funds for the cause and brought in just over $1,500.

There were 120 people who participated in the run and walk and all together raised $45,800.

Participants had the option of running five kilometers or walking two km and the funds raised during the run and walk go to the Kidney Foundation of Canada.
