One group that brings financial support to kids who want to get into team sports is in need of new volunteers.

Ponoka’s chapter of KidSport still operates but its headed out of its provincial office, explained Greg Ingalls, executive director for KidSport Alberta. He was at the Ponoka mass registration night Aug. 30 at the Kinsmen Community Centre to speak with folks interested in picking up where the last group of volunteers ended.

“What we do is we assist with registration fees for kids to participate in sports,” explained Ingalls of the program.

He says the hope is to find local volunteers to run Ponoka’s chapter. Last year Ponoka handed out more than $12,000 to help kids get into sports.

“We’re looking for a couple of people that are interested in helping kids play sports,” he explained.

There is a certain amount per child and per family per year, says Ingalls. That number is typically $250 to $500 per year depending on what the local chapter decides.

“Those dollars go directly from KidSport to the minor sports association to cover that registration fee,” he explained.

The organization is still able to accept applications online through the Ponoka chapter’s website.
