Learn to write from CBC literacy award finalist

By Jasmine Franklin

Jubilee Library is welcoming people of all ages to take part in a free writing workshop hosted by local CBC literacy award finalist for 2009.

A pen, notebook and desire to learn are the only requirements for the session taking place April 17 from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. During the workshop, attendees will learn about generating story ideas for fiction or non-fiction writing from presenter Fran Kimmel of Lacombe who holds numerous national awards for writing.

“I’ve heard lots of people say, ‘I think I’d like to write, but I don’t know where to start or what to write about.’ Often the smallest of ideas turn into big books,” Kimmel said. “Ideas are inside us and all around us, so it’s just a matter of paying attention and asking the right questions. We can actually prepare ourselves to be creative, and then the ideas come fast and furious.”

The program called Write On!, is launching for the first time this year. Communities including Innisfail, Lacombe, Olds, Provost, Stettler, Sylvan Lake, Rocky Mountain House and Sundre will also be a stop among the program’s 15 workshops throughout April.

Sponsored by the Writers Guild of Alberta, the Library Association of Alberta and the Parkland Regional Library, Lauralee Gilmour, representative of Parkland Library said the new program is aimed to help improve the writing skills of anyone interested in learning.

“It’s free and a community event that can get everyone involved,” Gilmour said. “Any age is welcome and we are really looking forward to having Fran as our presenter. She’s local and she’s very talented.”
