May the 4th be with you at the library

Ponoka Jubilee Library prepares for big fundraiser for May 4.

Ponoka Jubilee Library is proud to be helping our library board chair, Jerry Siemens, in his fundraiser for the Canadian Cancer Society. When Jerry approached the library board requesting that he be allowed to host his ‘Chop the Mop’ fundraiser, when he will chop off his mop of shoulder-length hair in return for donations, on May 4 at the library, one of the quick-witted board members responded with ‘May the 4th be with you’, and the idea for a night of great fun was born. For those of you who might not be Star Wars fans, May the 4th has become synonymous with the movie franchise, known officially as ‘Star Wars Day’, chosen for the easy pun on the catchphrase ‘May the Force Be With You’ featured in the films. So what else can we do at the library when someone approaches us to have an event on ‘Star Wars Day’, but go all out and celebrate?

We’ll start the evening at 5 p.m. with Jerry chopping his hair off, to the delight of all that have watched it grow these past few years. His goal is to raise $500 for the Canadian Cancer Society, but we are sure that as a community we can help him beat that goal easily. Everyone seems to have been affected by this terrible disease, either by watching a loved one in their battle, or fighting it themselves, so please give generously online at: http://convio.cancer.ca/goto/Chopthemop. You can also come and donate at the library, we have pledge forms available.

Then we will move on to the Star Wars portion of our evening. We have a bunch of Star Wars themed prizes to give away so be sure to come decked out in your best Star Wars costume. There will be games and crafts for the younger kids to enjoy, and the older crowd can sit down and enjoy a screening of the newest movie in the franchise: ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’. We’ll have sandwiches, popcorn, drinks and cookies out for everyone to nibble on. And at the end of the night one lucky participant gets to take home a DVD copy of the movie. But you have to be there to win, so come on down, and have a great time with us on ‘Star Wars Day’.

Looking for a way to spoil the women in your life? Everyone has a mother, sister, grandmother, daughter, wife, mother-in-law or friend who deserves some pampering. Or why not spoil yourself? Come talk to us about our ‘Mother’s Day-Escape to the Spa’ being held on May 7 from 2 to 5 p.m. at Cutting Edge Salon. There are mini-pedicures, mini-manicures, mini-facials and make-up sessions available for a fee, and there will be door prizes and refreshments.

Coming soon: From Matthew Quick, author of ‘Silver Linings Playbook’, comes ‘Every Exquisite Thing’; a celebration of the self and the formidable power of story.
