Mecca Glen students share the same beat

Students at Mecca Glen were able to make noise while learning about the importance of relationships on March 4. Tanya Schur from the popular organization ‘Drumocracy’ treated the students to a valuable experience using the rhythm of drums.

Schur grouped the students together in different drumming circles and worked with each group for an hour. Every student had something unique to offer to the group and everyone belonged.

Students were able to create their own rhythms and were able to see how each person was connected with everyone else in the circle. The students realized that they all shared the same beat and Schur was able to reveal to them that without some members of the circle playing, that something seemed to be missing.

The workshop allowed for the Mecca Glen students to take turns leading and following each other and the drumming moved with the ‘will’ of the group.

The school was able to bring in Schur to lead the session because of the support from ATA’s Public Education Committee and Mecca Glen Parent Council. ATA’s Public Education Committee also made a contribution of $500.

Drumocracy is a group that is focused on building community through drum circles. The drum circles create unity through the music and bring members of the group closer together with teamwork.
