Next semester, students at Ponoka Composite High School will be taking a brand new course.

In 2009, PCHS will begin running a Horsemanship Auction taught by Scott McGregor.

Based on a similar program that operates out of Cardston, the course structure is designed to focus on equine studies and non “rough stick” training. Bull riding and similar rodeo events will not be part of the program, but events such as barrel racing will be offered. It will also include going on multiple field trips giving students the opportunity to meet and speak with people in the industry.

Ron Rarick, assistant principal of PCHS and the person who purposed the program to the board, believes it has the capability to provide additional opportunities for a wide range of student interests.

“We live in a community with one of the biggest and best rodeos in the province and this is part of the lifestyle,” he said. “The course we are offering is designated to strengthening rider and horse relationships.”

It appears the induction of this course is perfectly on par with student interests as the course is currently at full capacity.

The course can be used as a pre-requisite for the Broncs Rodeo Academy, which will continue to be developed throughout 2009. The hope is that it will be up and running for September, but facility is an issue.

“The new Ag-event Centre is definitely an ideal location but it won’t be ready when we are,” said Rarick who mentioned the possibility of moving the program into that location once it becomes an option.
