Pirates will be terrorizing the stage at Diamond Willow Middle School. With a twist from the popular movie ‘Pirates of the Carribean’ students will be performing the play ‘Pirates of Ponoka’ written and directed by Kevin Ferguson.

Ferguson enjoyed writing the script to fit Ponoka and was excited to have the chance of taking on the tale of Pirates of the Carribean.

“I always wanted to do a Pirates of the Carribean theme and do something different with that idea,” said Ferguson.

There are approximately 15 people in the cast and each one plays an important part of the story.

The play is set in Ponoka and shows a grandfather telling his young grandson this story about when pirates came to the town.

One of the main pirates meets up with another pirate and together they come up with a plan to create a map. They agree to cover separate land areas and finish in Ponoka where they will meet up with each other again.

But there is a twist of events in the pirates’ plan for Ponoka as they are double-crossed by a girl named Ponoka Hontas.

Ferguson believes that the play will relate to the audience and that they will appreciate the humour that is interwoven throughout the story.

“People should come just for the entertainment value,” said Ferguson. “The play is close to home and makes references to things in Ponoka. It makes innocent fun at us.”

The cast of Pirates of Ponoka have been practicing hard for the play for about two and a half months and Ferguson has been pleased with the efforts and dedication of the actors, actresses and crew.

“I really enjoy working with the kids,” he said. “I find there’s not a lot out there like this that kids can get involved with, this is for the kids and they are doing a great job.”

The Pirates of Ponoka will be presented on June 3 to Ponoka Elementary School in the DWMS gym at 2 p.m. On June 4 the play will be performed for DWMS students at 10:45 and then a public evening performance will be at 7 p.m. The community will get another chance to see the play on June 9 at 7 p.m.
