Along with sponsoring Olympic speed skater Jessica Gregg, Ponoka Elementary School is carrying on the spirit of the Olympics through school activities.

Healthy Olympics

A nutrition initiative has begun for the elementary school to help students understand how healthy living improves lives.

“It’s a good tie into the Olympics and how healthy living equals good performance,” said principal Leslie Crawford. “It’s a good initiative for us all.”

Each class is assigned a country participating in the Winter Olympics and within the next few weeks will earn points for the amount of healthy items in their lunch.

Each week, a healthy food item will be identified in the announcements and each class with count the number of students with that item in their lunch.

Points will be totaled and a medal will be given to each class. Students can also earn points by actively taking part in events.

Special projects/winter Olympics

On Feb. 19 the school will host their special projects and Winter Olympics Day.

Beginning at 12:30 p.m. with a physical activity, the opening Olympic ceremony will begin. Students will break into their grade levels and take part in different activities such as skating on the school’s outdoor rink.

“We’re hoping to get three past students, two who were involved in the torch run and singer Kayla Williams, to come participate with us,” Crawford said. “But that hasn’t been confirmed just yet.”

Medals for nutrition winners will be handed out and parents will also be recognized at the event.

Closing ceremonies will take place at 2:30 p.m.
