Ponoka Piston Poppers putting on Seniors Parade

With June 5 to 11 being Alberta Seniors Week, the Ponoka Piston Poppers will be holding their annual Seniors Parade on the afternoon of June 9.

With June 5 to 11 being Alberta Seniors Week, the Ponoka Piston Poppers will be holding their annual Seniors Parade on the afternoon of June 9.

They anticipate a parade of about 25 cars to complete the route from Legacy Place, past Rimoka Golden Leisure Lodge, Ponoka Hospital and Care Centre, Northcott Lodge, the Centennial Centre for Mental Health and Brain Injury, and Ponoka Seasons Retirement Community.

They will end the tour at the Ponoka Seniors Drop-In Centre, in conjunction with their Strawberry and Ice Cream Cake social. In the past many people have stopped and watched their old antique and classic cars from the sidewalks in Ponoka.

“We take pride in doing a drive-by parade to various senior and assisted living homes,” said president Bruce Erickson.

The times and route are as follows:

12:30 - Cars stage at Ponoka Arena 13:00 - Cars leave arena north on 54th street

13:02 – East on 48th Ave.

13:04 – North on 52nd St.

13:06 – West on 57th Ave.

13:10 – Through Legacy Place Parking Lot.

13:14 – Through Rimoka Lodge parking lot and north through General Hospital Parking U-turn

13:17 – Out past Auxiliary and west on 57th Ave.

13:19 – South on 60th St.

13:21 – East on 48th Ave.

13:23 – North on 50th St. (Railway street through downtown)

13:24 – East on 53rd Ave. over the North Bridge

13:25 – South on Riverside Drive (46th St.)

13:26 – East on 48th Ave.

13:27 – In to Northcott Lodge and U turn in parking lot at back

13:30 – Exit Northcott west on 48th Ave.

13:35 – South on 43rd street

13:36 – Down to 44th street and across Highway 53 remaining on 44th street.

13:36 – South on 44th street to right on 38th Ave.

13:37 – South on 46th street to Centennial Centre first entrance.

13:45 – Stage on first entrance of Centennial Centre

13:50 – Start parade (Centennial Crescent)

14:10 – Leave Centennial Centre north to 50th Ave. (Chicken Hill)

14:13 – East on 50th Ave to 42nd St.

14:15 - South on 42nd St.

14:16 - East on 52nd Ave.

14:17 – South on 38th St. to 40th Ave.

14:18 – West on 40th Ave. to 40th St.

14:18 – North on 40th street to Seasons Retirement Community

Short stop at Seasons.

14:40 – Leave Seasons to Seniors Drop-in for cake

14:41 – South on 40th St.

14:41 – West on 40th Ave.

14:43 – South on 46 St. (Riverside Drive)

14:45 – West on 53 across south bridge to Railway St.

14:46 – North on Railway Street and west into Hammy’s for cake at Seniors Drop in Centre.

The Ponoka Piston Poppers have been an active group in Ponoka for 45 years and continue to give back to the community. Their mission is to promote fellowship and enjoyment among the families and friends of members who own and operate hot rods, street rods, classic cars, vintage, and special interest vehicles.

The club has 38 members, including members from Lacombe, Stettler, Bashaw, Ferintosh, and Millet.
