Just in time for Canada 150, the Ponoka Rotary Club has constructed a large flag pole at the intersection of Highway 2A and Highway 53.

The Rotary Club of Ponoka started this flagpole idea three years ago and it is finally complete. The group used Canada’s 150th as a deadline and many community partners pulled together to help us achieve this lofty goal.

Almita Piling was responsible for donating the foundation screw pile to hold up the 60 foot pole.

Although the project idea and the main funding came from the Rotary Club of Ponoka the group is grateful to Alberta Flares for expertise and assistance on the project management side to complete the build and installation once the pole was delivered. Alberta Flares donated their services and also contributed money to the project.

Thirdly, Calnash Trucking was instrumental in hauling the long pole and supplying the crane and expertise to erect it. The Rotary Club is appreciative of all the support.

The club adds its thanks to the Town of Ponoka and Ponoka County, plus Shoppers Drug Mart and Wills Welding/Accu Publishing for direct sponsorship of the project.

A big show of gratitude goes to the hard-working Rotarians who believed in the project so much that they continue to try and get it in place despite the many obstacles that we encountered over the years.

Much gratitude to the local Rotarians: Gord and Delphine Svenningsen, Juanita Knight, Linda Steinmann, Peter Lok, Marc Kallal, Jennifer Bartley, Layna Palechek, Tanya Bristow and Melodie Woods,

The club also thanked members of the community for their support.

A flag raising will be held Friday, June 30 at 9 a.m. sharp prior to the Stampede Parade.

Anyone is welcome to join to sing O Canada while the flag is raised.
