In the early history of Ponoka, devastating fires would destroy many popular landmarks.

In 1932 Hornstein’s Store on Chipman Avenue was completely gutted. What had been one of the largest buildings in town had previously been the location of the palatial Alberta Temperance Hotel from 1900 to 1920.

The Hotel was well known for its posh furnishings and decor, comfortable rooms, first class meals and service, but absolutely no liquor!
