DON SWEET

Don Sweet was one of the early colorful characters of Ponoka. He wore many hats and over the years would serve as an undertaker, plumber, hairdresser, steam engineer, businessman and finally our mayor from 1948-50. He also raised canaries, hunting dogs, bees, and seven kinds of apples. He and wife Frankie built the Sweet Block on Chipman Avenue, running a successful beauty parlour upstairs.

Don’s brother, Ted, was one of the community’s tall, lean and most eligible bachelors, who was a great athlete, served in the Second World War and managed the MacLeod’s Store for many years.
