Remember When? Our earliest settlers coming into Alberta in the late 1890s had to make do with what the rugged environment offered them. Many of these sod homes were built and dug into the ground across the prairies, and would serve as the only year-round shelter for large families, supplies, dogs, and even livestock until their new homesteads were established. This 1907 photo was taken somewhere in the lush fields and rolling tree-lined landscape between Stettler and Ponoka. Photo from a Picture History of Alberta
