Remember When? The Battle

Given the time of year, this is a reminder of how the river used to be

The mighty Battle: This classic photo was taken between 1926-1940 and features the now historic Battle River Dam, which was located on the river below the CPR Railway station and tracks beside 50th Street in Ponoka. For many early decades at this location, massive log jams from Battle Lake were directed over the dam and to the local sawmills that were located at the top bend of the river. This always popular location for fishing and social activities was always teeming with hungry jackfish and suckers as well as boaters and swimmers. But please beware, because on many occasions during the annual spring break up, the Battle would become a mighty torrent of water and ice that rose over its banks and often flooded the entire area.
