School assembly celebrates teacher’s retirement

Another school year is over and that means big changes for Ponoka Elementary School, which held its final assembly June 27.

Another school year is over and that means big changes for Ponoka Elementary School, which held its final assembly June 27.

Several staff members of the school will not return next year, including Mandy Staples.

Tears were shed by staff, students and parents as a poem was read to Staples, who sat with a Kleenex pressed to her eyes.

Over the course of her career, Staples has taught more than 700 students and was a staple at the elementary school.

The Grade 5 class also presented a play they had created especially for the final assembly. It centred on students time travelling and looking for displays of teamwork throughout history.

The play held an array of characters, including time travelling cheerleaders, cavemen, and, appropriately, cowboys of the wild west.

The assembly also hosted an information session about the summer reading program held at the Ponoka Public Library. The program will also have crafts, games and prizes, said Jenica Kostiuk, program coordinator.
