Spring has sprung with Silver Valley 4-H Riders

by Blade Christensen

Spring is here and with that we are really starting to get busy with out 4-H Club. On March 6 we had our monthly meeting discussing some fundraisers that we thought would be good for our club. We sold hanging flower baskets from Arbutus Nursery. They gave us a percentage of each pot that we sold, Thank you Debbie and Tony for your generosity. On March 14 we went out bowling for our family fun day, I must say that everyone had a blast. On March 16 we had our monthly ride and the juniors had an additional clinic on dismounted abilities. Thank you Shayna Pugh and Rhonda Reimer for instructing us on this ride. Every spring our club helps out at the Alberta Hospital Ponoka. We volunteered on March 19 by helping set out food, clear tables and other duties. It’s always nice to be able to volunteer. April only gets busier. We started our month with our regular meeting. April 5 our club hosted a multi species judging clinic at Vold, Jones and Vold Auction Mart where we were taught how to judge dogs, horses, dairy cattle, photography and seed recall classes. For our District Fun Day we went to West Edmonton Mall. We could go to the Water Park or Galaxy Land Park; of course what the girls really enjoyed was to go shopping. On April 14, Ed Turko from Cochrane, Alberta drove up to instruct us on a reigning clinic, thanks to Mr. Turko. April 28 we were lucky enough to have Don Badry instruct us on a trail clinic. Don has been to the world finals with his horse doing trail. He worked with us on a one to one basis and as a group for us to learn the fine details and some of his own techniques on trail. Many thanks to Don Badry. We’re down to one more month left for our 4-H year. Wow where has the time gone. If anyone is interested West Central 4-H will be hosting a three-day horse show at the Westerner Grounds in Red Deer on May 30, 31 and June 1. This brings together all the 4-H equine clubs in the West Central Region for a year-end horse show. There’s lot’s to see and do, plus it’s free admission. Hope to see you there.
