An artist from St. Augustine School is having her work displayed on a big stage.

Grade 4 student Alison Guthrie has been selected as a winner of the ATB Financial Young Artist Competition.

Alongside 29 other grade 4 students’ work, Guthrie’s painting will be displayed at the Art Gallery of Alberta in Edmonton.

The contest, which was open to all grade 4 students in Alberta, required the students to draw or paint an Alberta natural resource as well as a story.

The painting also had to fit in with the social studies curriculum that the students are learning.

Guthrie drew a painting with a train, workers and immigrants coming to Alberta. The rest was decorated with wild roses.

“I just couldn’t think of anything else to draw,” said Guthrie. “But the wild rose is a symbol of Alberta.”

Aside from Guthrie’s art being displayed at the art gallery, all entries received from the two classes at St. Augustine School that participated will be displayed at the Ponoka ATB branch.

Entries for the contest were judged on content, creativity, composition and craftsmanship.

Out of hundreds of entries received from all corners of the province, Guthrie’s painting was selected.

“It’s hard to describe, it’s a little overwhelming,” said Guthrie.

This accomplishment for Guthrie only pads her elementary school resume.

She was nominated as a Leader of Tomorrow and she was also a spelling bee finalist at St. Augustine.

At the end of May, when the paintings are taken down from the art gallery, Guthrie will have her painting returned to her.
