Following the Economic Development Community Planning meeting on Feb. 6 the Economic Development board has viewed the input given and developed a plan.

The plan was discussed at the Town of Ponoka council meeting on April 8. It focuses on four area priorities; business retention and expansion, opportunity identification and business attraction and investment, community lifestyle development and marketing and communication.

Community Services Activity Report

The skating and curling ice has been removed by the Public Works staff from the Ponoka Culture and Recreation Complex. The staff at the arena is now working to prepare the floor for the off-season as well as some maintenance work and inspection.

Protective Services Activity Report

Fire calls up to March 31, 2008 have decreased since March 31, 2007. A total of 38 calls were made in 2007 and 32 were made for 2008.

Motor vehicle accidents and false alarm calls are down from 2007 and other agency assists have had a slight increase.

In 2007 there were nine fire calls compared to a total of seven for the first quarter of 2008. Rubbish and grass fires were up from last year’s number of two to four for this year.

Vehicle accidents have decreased from 17 to 13 and false alarms from eight to two.

Other agency assists went up from two to six and includes helping the Wolf Creek School Division with the water main break.

The annual Household Toxic Round Up will take place on Sept. 13 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Ponoka Fire Hall.
