Christine Paterson, left and Ashley Barclay recently planted some flowers on Chipman Avenue. The Town of Ponoka public works crews have planted approximately 30 planters through out town. In this planter they planted spikes, petunias and daffodils.

The Liquor Store has been a member of the Ponoka Welcome Wagon for 13 years. Receiving their plaque in the left picture are owners Bing Jones and Shirley Jones, centre. Presenting the award is Judy Olfert, area manager, Violet Smith, Ponoka Head representative and Pat Newman the president of Welcome Wagon. Rexall also recently received a plaque from Welcome Wagon for being a part of the program for 25 years. Olfert, Newman and Smith presented their plaque to representatives from Rexall.

There is no stopping Ponoka resident Douglas Howard when it comes to raising awareness for Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease changed Howard’s life when he was diagnosed with ALS eight years ago, since then Howard has moved forward with his passion to raise funds and awareness for the disease.

Over 90 years of friendly community hospitality and care is the wonderful legacy that has been created by several generations of mothers, daughters, and grandmothers as members of the longstanding Arbor Park Ladies group. The Ladies of the Arbor Park district located north of Ponoka, first organized in 1918 as a local of the United Farm Women of Alberta, and are still going strong.

Breast cancer is the most common cancer among Canadian women and one in nine women is expected to develop breast cancer during her lifetime according to the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation.

Red feathers, sparkles, sashes and all sorts of beautiful attire adorned the red hats of the Mecca Marvelous Mamaz who hosted the Spring into Summer Party on May 31. The party attracted approximately 140 women wearing red hats and purple dresses to the Ponoka Branch of the Royal Canadian Legion to have a rousing good time.

In preparation for an address I was to give at a Women’s Conference recently, in which I was going to speak about the culture in which we live, I came across a poem on the internet by a self-professed “atheist.” In this poem, entitled God Isn’t Real, the author proclaimed the uselessness of praying, going to Church, or reading the Bible because, well, God isn’t real. The poem could be viewed by some as arrogant and bombastic.

Fifty years ago, when the current compliance and enforcement portions of the Food and Drugs Act came into effect, the natural health products most likely found in Canadian homes were vitamin C and cod liver oil.

Their new home has two office areas, business information, tourist centre and a conference room that can fit 20 to 30 people for the members to use.
