Bixby and bulls coming to Ponoka arena

The Ponoka Agriculture Society is gearing up for a day of fun, competition and entertainment at their second annual Bullarama on May 2.

The Bullarama will take place at the Ponoka Culture and Recreation complex and will feature an incredible half-time performance by the talented Canadian Idol runner-up Jaydee Bixby.

“Having Bixby perform at this event is awesome,” said Sherry Gummow president of the Ag Society. “It’s great to have him come and entertain.”

Gummow believes the Bullarama is a huge draw to everyone young or old and will be a day of good community fun.

“Bull riding is a family event,” she said. “All ages can come out and enjoy themselves.”

There will be 30 Professional Bull Riders in the long go and the top six will riders will proceed to the short go.

“It’s an awesome spectator sport that is growing in popularity,” said Gummow. “It’s a main attraction at rodeos and another reason to draw people together.”

The Ag Society has changed a few things from last year including moving the bucking arena to centre ice for the purpose of using the bleachers to a greater extent.

Many people are helping out with this event and Gummow is pleased with the support.

“We have great volunteers,” she said. “Groups in the town have been working with us to help make the Bullarama another success.”

The Ponoka Youth Centre and local 4-H Clubs will also be helping make the Bullarama another success this year by offering a 50/50 draw and giving their time.

A cabaret will follow the Bullarama and will be a time for dancing and fellowship.

“People really like the cabaret afterwards,” said Gummow. “They can dance or just sit and have a conversation and enjoy the evening.”

The Bullarama may also be a chance to see some celebrity bartenders supplied by the Ponoka Stampede Society.

Doors will be opened at 6:30 p.m. with the event beginning at 7:30 p.m.

Tickets for the Bullarama are available at Jones Boys Western Wear in Ponoka and Red Deer.
