At 82 years of age, longtime Ponoka resident Edith Kane celebrated the opening of her first-ever art gallery with family and friends on Jan. 12, at The Crow on Chipman Avenue.
As one of The Crow’s current featured artists, about 20 of Kane’s oil paintings, mainly featuring nature and country themes, are on display on the east wall of the restaurant.
Having painted for most of her life, Kane said living in the country, there’s no shortage of inspiration, and while she loves painting summer scenes, she said she does her best work in a blizzard.
Born in Rimbey in 1940, Kane has lived on a farm west of Ponoka for 65 years.
While she prefers to paint with oils, she also uses watercolours and draws with pencil crayon.
“(Oils) give me enough time to see my mistakes and can be corrected. Watercolours are fast and can leave you with surprises,” said Kane in her feature artist bio.
“I know we have a beautiful works and I like to paint what I feel and see.”
A member of the Ponoka Word Weavers, Kane is also apt at describing the beauty of nature in her poetry.
The Crow is showcasing local talent.
Owner Laeta Morskate said she knows a lot of artists and she’s been inviting them to display their art at the restaurant.
“They’re endearing captures,” said Morskate of Kane’s artwork.
Kane’s artwork will be on display for about six weeks.
