A new event, Cosplay Cafe, is coming to the Ponoka Jubilee Library (PJL) on Aug. 13.

The library says the convention is “a perfect small-town vibe event for cosplayers, anime fans, gamers, families and anyone interested in the amazing world of cosplay.”

Smaller than their previous convention, Central Alberta Fanfest, Cosplay Cafe will include three cosplay contests, a trivia game, a panel on the growing trend of “Disney bounding,” a cosplay Jedi showcase, a Pokemon scavenger hunt, and hopefully a small video gaming tournament.

“The idea of the event is to showcase some cool aspects of the world of cosplay,” said library assistant Cynthia Bottomley.

Bottomley explained cosplay is dressing up and performing as a character from a fictional world.

It can be a character from an existing fictional work or an original creation inspired from fictional works. Fictional works can include, but aren’t limited to, movies, T.V. shows, manga, video games, books, and music.

“We encourage anyone who wants to come in costume to do so,” said Bottomley.

“Anyone can cosplay at any age. You don’t have to be a master craftsperson or actor.”

Test your knowledge on cosplay, anime and other fandoms at Cosplay Café Trivia, meet some Ponoka Jedi’s at a Jedi demonstration, or grab a treat at the Hangout Zone.

Free baked goodies, coffee, tea, water and hot chocolate will be available along with seating and Wi-Fi access.

Take part in the cosplay contest with three categories: beginner, experienced and family.

Pre-registration is required for the cosplay events, either online or at the welcome booth the day of the event.

The event is free of charge and open for all ages. It will run from 12 to 4 p.m., the same as the opening hours of the library.

PJL is looking for donations of baked items for the cafe area. If interested, contact ponokafanfest@gmail.com.
