An American citizen since 1965, world famous guitarist, songwriter and bandleader Carlos Humberto Santana Barragan was born in the Mexican state of Jalisco, in 1947. His early musical influences were his mariachi violinist father and fellow Mexican Ritchie Valens.
By the early 60s however, he had become interested in American R’n’B, jazz and blues as well as Afro-Cuban and Latin music. So it’s not surprising that his own original music reflects these many styles and is often described as “Latin infused rock”.
By the mid 60s Santana was beginning to make a name for himself in the San Francisco avant-garde music scene. Here he caught he attention of clever promoter Bill Graham who helped him land a recording contract and a spot at the 1969 Woodstock festival. His stunning performance at Woodstock, together with the success of the album “Santana”, featuring the hit single “Black Magic Woman”, catapulted him to international fame.
Over his lengthy career, Santana has sold more than 100 million albums, earned ten Grammys, three Latin Music awards and been inducted into both The Rick’n’Roll Hall Of Fame and Songwriters Hall Of Fame. Rolling Stone Magazine places him at number 20 on their “100 Best Guitarists” list. His music crosses cultural boundaries on a world wide basis. He is a true “guitar hero”.
