Almost every community has one — a small town hero who makes a big impact on the lives of those around them. In celebration of these extraordinary people, UFA has launched the second annual Small Town Heroes contest in partnership with Juno award-winning country artist Paul Brandt.
Two Small Town Heroes will be selected by a panel of judges. The winners will each receive a concert in their community by country superstar Paul Brandt. In addition, winners will receive $2,500 to put towards their community initiatives. Eight runner ups will each receive $1,000 for their community.
Ponoka will have a second chance to win the Brandt concert. Last January Brandt stopped briefly in Ponoka to meet fans and special volunteers.
“UFA is more than a hundred years old,” said Bob Nelson, CEO of UFA. “Throughout our history we have documented countless examples of community members who have selflessly given their time and energy to help others. That spirit lives on in small towns and the UFA Small Town Heroes contest is our way of saying thanks for everything you do.”
The call for nominations is open until Aug.15 with winners being announced on Sept. 30. Nominees will be judged on the positive impact they have made to their community, the creativity of the application and the number of votes from the community.

In 2010, Dr. Liesl Lewke-Bogle from Milk River and Doris McFarlane of Beaverlodge were named UFA’s Small Town Heroes.
