Bashaw Senior Drama Club performs 'Newsies'

Production ran at the early part of June

Bashaw's senior high drama club presented its 2025 production at the beginning of June.

The young thespians performed the Disney production Newsies, which is based on the real-life newsboy strike which gripped New York in 1899.

Young Jack Kelly, who becomes the leader of a newsboy union, is the main protagonist of Newsies.

Kelly leads the newsboys to strike when they are pushed by the paper they work for with what they deem to be unfair changes.

Through the story, Kelly and the other newsboys face many trials and challenges before ultimately coming to a deal with Mr. Pulitzer, the villain of the story, that everyone could agree on.

"With help from the beautiful female reporter Katherine Plumber, all of New York soon recognizes the power of the 'little man,'" reads a description of the one-act play.

The production ran from June 5-8 at the Bashaw United Church, and featured a cast of 32 youth.

Heather Dimond and Lori Miller served as directors of the musical production.

In total, the play ran for around 90 minutes, featuring 13 different musical numbers.

Around 50 people were in the audience for the June 6 show, who showed their appreciation to the youth performance with a standing ovation.
