Over the weekend, Red Deer RCMP captured an inmate who escaped from Stan Daniels Healing Centre in Edmonton.

The inmate, William Mackinaw was caught by Red Deer RCMP on Oct. 19 at 10:55 p.m. According to the Correction Services of Canada, Mackinaw had been unlawfully at large from the Stan Daniels Healing Centre, a Section 81 facility operated by the Native Counselling Services of Alberta (NCSA), since January 4, 2024.

The centre is a circle-based group program exploring the effects of personal and historical trauma and provides opportunities for spiritual exploration and healing. It houses conditionally released and federally sentenced Indigenous inmates.

The Edmonton Police says Mackinaw escaped after failing to report to work while on an authorized temporary absence.

Mackinaw is currently serving a sentence of 23 years for multiple offences, including firearms-related offences.

NCSA and the Correctional Service of Canada are conducting an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Ensuring the safety and security of institutions, staff, and public remains the highest priority in the operations of the federal correctional system.
