Dentist shows moving to Ponoka was a good idea

I believe that with all of the negative news of our times, the losses and struggles it is important to have some positive issues to reflect on and to help us all keep our ‘balance.’

Dear Editor:

I am hoping that you will include this letter in your next paper, as I believe that with all of the negative news of our times, the losses and struggles it is important to have some positive issues to reflect on and to help us all keep our ‘balance.’

Over the festive season, my mother, who had recently had extractions and new dentures was suffering extreme discomfort and had not been able to enjoy her Christmas dining at all. I had gone into the local drugstore to try and find something to sooth her mouth sores and the pharmacist there heard my story and said “just a minute.” When she returned she asked if my mother could see a dentist at 4 p.m. I pointed out to her that the dentist’s were closed and her dentist, in another town, would not be back until the New Year.

“No, I have an appointment for her to see Dr. Barr today at 4 p.m. if she would like to, he would be best able to decide what she needs.” I was astonished and gratefully accepted the offer.

We met with Dr. Barr, who had come in just to see her, adjusted the places on her dentures that were causing the problems and when mom offered to pay, he said, “Merry Christmas, glad I could help you!” and off we went. This level of service, the connections in this town are truly exemplary.

There are many small towns in our country and likely this story could be repeated in some of them, but the town of Ponoka can be very proud of the folks that make this place their home. We are newly returned to Ponoka and as I reflect on this example of ‘small town life’ I am reminded of why we chose to live here. People care, they are willing to go the extra mile, putting themselves out to help others without any expectation of ‘pay back’ just pay it forward.

These are golden qualities and the treasures of this small town and we are proud to be a part of it.
