Food bank recognizes needy

National Hunger Awareness Day is June 2.

Dear Editor:

National Hunger Awareness Day is June 2. It is an opportunity to tell the story of food banks and the people helped by them in this country,

Ponoka Food Bank is a member of Food Banks Canada and Food Banks Alberta. The results of the current economic downturn and climbing job losses are now very evident in food banks nationwide and in Ponoka.

At the local level we have experienced a greater demand for help. This year, in the period January through April, we helped 69 more adults and 26 more children as compared to the same period in 2008. Red Deer Food Bank has experienced a 67-per-cent increase over the same period.

In Ponoka, we recognize and are extremely grateful for the genuine willingness of companies, organizations and individual donors to help the fellow citizens by their contributions to the food bank.

On June 2, we ask you to take the opportunity to remember those in need and the benefits provided to them by the Ponoka Food Bank.

June Lee,

president,

Ponoka Food Bank
