Resident council rules discriminatory

Dear Editor:

In reply to Nellie Bos’ s letter of Jan. 26. 2011 Something wrong at Rimoka.

Nellie co-authored the guidelines for the Family and Resident Council meetings. The guidelines are worded in such a way that they excluded anyone without family living in Ponoka or Ponoka County. You could only attend those meetings if you were accompanied by a family member. So by that criteria if your children’s careers required them to move elsewhere to support themselves, you could not attend the meetings. If you are a single person you cannot attend the meetings, ditto if you had been married but never had children. There were quite a few of us discriminated against due to that wording.

There was never any effort made to change that wording, even though Mrs. Bos was an employee here for several years after its creation and should have realized there was a problem when the meetings were kept small and private. Until very recently, the meetings were never announced, attendees were notified individually and the meetings held in a separate room with the doors closed.

All the residents are paying rent here so there should be no discrimination against anyone wanting to attend meetings that are supposed to be for the betterment of all residents.
