Sing O Canada with pride not jazz

Dear Editor:

What ever happened to our lovely old Canadian anthem O Canada, which sounded so good? It brought tears to your eyes just knowing you lived in a country that stood for freedom, believed in God and was proud of the vast land on which we live. Let us be a proud people who live in this most beautiful land, because there are places on this planet that do not enjoy the freedom we experience.

My wife Margaret and I went to watch the figure skating competition at the Ponoka arena, we stood like all the people there did as O Canada was played. To tell you the truth, I could not understand a single word that was sung because the girl who sang it must have been on American Idol with all the changing of levels of her voice.

When we go to any affair, whether it be figure skating or a hockey game and “our national anthem” is played, it should be sung with dignity and love not jazzed up like “listen to my voice I am so good.” I do not want to listen to a person who has a wide range of octaves in their voice — I’ll leave that to Roy Orbison. I just want the straight and wonderful sound of a special piece of music.
