Supporting BGC Wolf Creek in-school mentoring programs, Bowl for Kids is set to run on March 7 at the Ponoka Leisure Lanes Bowling Alley.
It will also be held in Rimbey on March 14 to support programming in that community.
All proceeds raised go to support the BGC mentoring program, said Beth Reitz, executive director of the Ponoka Youth Centre, which includes BGC Wolf Creek.
"The theme this year is Heroes versus Villains," added Jill Little, director of support programs. "We give it a theme each year, and people come dressed up - it's all part of the fun!"
Little said this year's fundraising goal is $20,000, adding the popular event has been held in Ponoka for about 30 years now.
Last year, $18,000 was raised in Ponoka, and nearly $7,000 was raised in Rimbey.
Folks interested in taking part are encouraged to sign up soon as to be better able to select a time slot to bowl that works best for them.
"Each team that enters pays $500 - whether it's through sponsorship, or they can collect pledges."
Participants are asked to form teams of up to six people, which can include friends, family members, employees, and/or co-workers.
There are also opportunities to sponsor teams, donate prizes, or help to provide refreshments.
Meanwhile, BGC Wolf Creek’s mentoring program runs from September through to June.
Mentors are matched with a child between the ages of six and 17, and meet with them once a week for an hour to play games, do crafts and just have fun together.
These days, staff are looking at increasing the number of mentors, said Reitz.
"We are doing a push for mentoring right now - we need about 15 mentors in Ponoka, and about 10 in Rimbey."
She said year after year, she sees many of the same folks signing up to support the cause via Bowl for Kids. It's a fun way to raise money what with the themes each year, she said. Plus, it's a short time commitment as well.
For Little, who joined the staff last year, it's a joy to take part in Bowl for Kids, which has known such solid community support over the years.
"I've heard so much about it, and how fun it is," she said. "I'm excited to see what people come up with in terms of costumes!"
She also emphasized the important, ongoing work of the Ponoka Youth Centre, and the mentoring programs in particular.
"Anybody can be a mentor - there are no special skills required. It's a small time commitment, too - one hour a week, and takes place within the school hours. You get to give to these young people who need somebody, and they will give you as much back.
"I haven't spoken to one of my mentors who has said they don't love it. They get a really good connection with these kids, and they see the impact.
"We also see a lot of growth in the kids, too. I think the consistent and constant friendship is important. It helps the kids, and they know that the mentor genuinely cares for them."
