Susan Bobbi Herrera, the former chief executive officer of the Confederacy of Treaty 6 Nations and Maskwacis resident, has passed away.
“On behalf of the Assembly of First Nations, we extend our deepest condolences to the family, friends, and community of Susan Bobbi Herrera, known to many as Bobbi," said National Chief Cindy Woodhouse Nepinak in a statement on Feb. 5.
"She was a dedicated advocate for First Nations at both regional and national levels, making significant contributions to the well-being and advancement of many communities."
As CEO of the Confederacy, Woodhouse Nepinak said Herrera "worked tirelessly to advance First Nations’ inherent and treaty rights, promote language revitalization, and improve First Nations health and well-being."
"She was deeply respected by her home community of the Yakama Nation in Montana, Maskwacis First Nation where she made her home, and many other communities across the country."
A public Facebook post stated Herrera "was called home by the Creator and went peacefully surrounded by loved ones" in the morning on Feb. 4.
According to the family, it was Herrera's wishes that no wake or funeral services be held.
"Our thoughts and prayers are with Bobbi’s loved ones. We wish them comfort in the memories they share," said Woodhouse Nepinak.
