Results of Ponoka News’ most recent web poll show voters prefer to see snow graded and cleared in the same day.

Snow clearing in certain parts of Ponoka is an issue that residents have brought up with town councillors recently. In an effort to determine what residents prefer, we asked the question: What’s the best option for clearing snow?

We posed two options:

• Pushed into windrows but having to wait till it’s cleared. Usually gets done sooner.

• Having the snow graded and cleared in the same day. Can take longer.

There were seven readers (7.53 per cent) who posted their own thoughts, with most pointing to frustration over some streets not even touched this season.

Preference among readers pointed to having snow graded and cleared the same day with 49 votes (52.69 per cent) while 37 votes (39.78 per cent) voted in favour of pushing the snow into windrows.

Looking at the comments on Facebook it appears there’s a section of town that may not have had any snow cleared recently.

For Felicity Docken, the issue is the feeling that her street has been neglected all year. “If it’s pushed into windrows are side streets going to be addressed better?”

“I hate driving my poor vehicle down it let alone trying to get into the alley due to the big lip left behind from the one previous scrape, I feel it’s going to get damaged one day. Some street ruts are so bad it’s almost impossible for two vehicles to go down them at the same time,” she added.

An area to stay away from, according to Michael Simms, is 52 Street. “But don’t worry they scraped the road north 57th Avenue and the street east,” stated Simms.

“Either 51 or 53. Pretty sure it’s 51. Makes no sense. Also wouldn’t it make sense after each snowfall to do the roads leading to both hospitals first and foremost?” he asked.

Reader Jamie L Schultz is not impressed. “Absolutely horrible! Lol.”

“They have not been doing their job to their capabilities at all,” stated Schultz. “No excuses that’ll matter! We all pay good taxes, yet vehicles destroyed by the town!”

One reader feels the job is thankless. Brenda Massing offered her gratitude to the snow removal crews. “Thank you to the folks that have this thankless and never-ending job.”
